Canada-US Boundary Waters Treaty

Canada signed its first international environmental protection treaty, the Canada-US Boundary Waters Treaty, establishing the International Joint Commission. The Boundary Waters Treaty was signed by the United States and Canada. Each country pledged that the boundary waters between them would not be polluted to the detriment of the health or property of the other. The treaty also created the International Joint Commission, which controlled water disputes between the signatories and prepared reports on environmental issues relevant to them. The treaty was one of the most significant international agreements of the time, and was a model for environmental dispute resolution.
