The Drummond Mine explosion in Westville, Nova Scotia, on May 13, 1873, was a devastating coal mining disaster. What began as a small fire quickly escalated into multiple explosions, engulfing the mine in flames. Seventy miners perished in the explosions or were sealed inside as rescuers desperately tried to contain the inferno. The mine was eventually flooded to extinguish the fire, marking one of Canada’s deadliest mining accidents.
