Audubon Society of Canada Formed, Canadian Nature Magazine

Mabel Frances Whittemore

The Society originated as a branch of the Audubon Society, established in New York in 1886 to combat poaching and the commercial hunting of fish and wildlife. In 1948, the Canadian Society acquired Canadian Nature, a magazine created in memory of naturalist Mabel Frances Whittemore. The magazine gained widespread success, receiving support from education departments across Canada. Renamed Canadian Audubon in 1958, it adopted a strong advocacy focus.
