The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed in the United States and the term environmental assessment entered our vocabulary (though the Canadian initiatives in this regard were slower in coming). Canadians and Americans alike were soon aware that their detergents were polluting the Great Lakes, as were a wide array of industries, especially in such locations as Sarnia, Hamilton, Cleveland, and Buffalo.
