National Energy Program (NEP)

Introduced by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal government on October 28, 1980, the National Energy Program (NEP) aimed to achieve Canadian energy independence, increase Canadian ownership of the oil industry, and redistribute wealth from non-renewable resources. The policy, implemented after the oil crises of the 1970s, imposed price controls, export duties, and revenue-sharing measures, promoting exploration and alternative energy sources. While intended to benefit consumers and the broader economy, the NEP faced strong opposition from the private sector and oil-producing provinces, particularly Alberta.
