The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE) was created by Canada’s Progressive Conservative Party in response to the 1987 UN document Our Common Future. The NRTEE aimed to sustain Canada’s prosperity without depleting resources for future generations. It served as an independent advisory body, raising awareness about sustainable development challenges and providing advice on reconciling economic growth with environmental conservation.
Over 25 years, the NRTEE released numerous reports on issues like climate change, energy, water, and infrastructure, bringing together leaders from business, academia, environmentalism, and public policy. Funding for the NRTEE ended under Stephen Harper’s government, and it ceased operations on March 31, 2013.
