The Hagersville Tire Fire, which started on February 12, 1990, at the Tyre King Tire Recycling facility near Hagersville, Ontario, consumed 14 million tires and burned 18 football fields. The fire, fought for 17 days by 24 fire departments, caused $15–25 million in damages, displaced 4,000 residents, and released toxic smoke. Investigators determined it was likely caused by arson, with one person pleading guilty. The fire led to tire recycling reforms, including the creation of the Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies (CATRA) in 1999, and Ontario’s Used Tires Diversion Program in 2008. It marked a pivotal moment for sustainable tire recycling practices in Canada.
