In the 1990s, the breakup of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica was the most dramatic visible evidence of human-induced climate change. In this decade, the loss of sea ice in the Arctic became the most striking indicator. By the end of the decade, Arctic sea ice was 40 percent thinner than in the 1950s. While scientists had long predicted this trend, there were also unexpected developments.
