Earth Summit, Rio Summit, Agenda 21

The Government of Canada participated in the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), or “Earth Summit,” in Rio de Janeiro. The summit, attended by 172 countries, highlighted global environmental issues and led to key agreements, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration, and principles for sustainable forest management were adopted by over 178 governments.
