The History of Environment in Canada

Protestors began blocking roads in Clayoquot Sound to oppose logging, leading to more than 900 arrests, the largest mass arrest in Canadian history.

In the 1990s, attention turned to Clayoquot Sound, an old-growth area in B.C., where the NDP government of Mike Harcourt planned commercial logging on nearly half the land and restrictions on another 18%. This sparked the War in the Woods, culminating in 856 arrests in 1993. In 1996, a compromise reduced logging areas, and in 2000, UNESCO designated the entire sound a Biosphere Reserve.
