The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer

The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion, achieved universal ratification by 2009 with 197 signatories. This unprecedented level of global cooperation makes the Montreal Protocol the first treaty in the history of the United Nations to be signed and ratified by every country on Earth.
