Nearly 200 community-based projects across the Province of New Brunswick are sharing $9.7 million from the Environmental Trust Fund.
The 196 initiatives have a range of goals, from protecting the environment and managing waste to addressing climate change.
“Individually and collectively, these projects will help protect, preserve and enhance our province’s natural environment for the long term,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage. “Our government is firmly committed to continuing to invest in innovative approaches that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make New Brunswick more resilient.”
Since its inception in 1990, the Environmental Trust Fund has supported community-based initiatives that focus on several priority areas: environmental protection, raising environmental awareness, waste management, addressing climate change and building sustainable communities.
Here are some of the organizations that received funds:
- Ducks Unlimited Canada received three investments: for Forested Wetland Stewardship on Private Woodlots DUC will work with landowners to protect forested wetlands on private woodlots ($73,000); Ducks Unlimited Canada Provincial Wetland Education & Awareness in Action DUC will empower people to take action for the protection and conservation of wetland habitats ($100,000); and, Ducks Unlimited Canada Treasured Wetlands of New Brunswick Ducks Unlimited will promote land stewardship and public engagement ($66,000).
- NB Community Harvest Gardens Inc. Urban Teaching Farm (Year 10 NBCHG) will continue to co-create and deliver educational programming on climate-resiliency and adaptation through sustainable agroecological practices ($70,000).
- New Brunswick Environmental Network for Climate Change Resiliency – Adaptation through Collaboration NBEN will bring together a wide variety of stakeholders under the umbrella of the Climate Change Adaptation Collaborative ($64,800).
- New Brunswick Indigenous Career College for Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future – Climate Change and Biodiversity Education in New Brunswick This project aims to develop and implement a comprehensive awareness program targeting high school students and youth in First Nations in New Brunswick. The initiative will focus on enhancing students’ understanding of climate change, biodiversity challenges, and sustainable environmental practices ($40,320).
