Green hydrogen projects fuelled by Nova Scotia’s Clean Fuels Fund

[post-views]

The Nova Scotia government is supporting several green hydrogen projects in the second round of funding from the Clean Fuels Fund. In all, seven projects involving clean fuels innovation were provided a total of $3 million.

“Nova Scotia is seizing the tremendous opportunities we have to develop and use low-carbon and renewable fuels to power our industries and businesses,” said Nova Scotia Energy Minister Trevor Boudreau. “Through the Clean Fuels Fund, we are providing a financial boost to innovators who want to put these fuels to work and help grow our green economy.”

Examples of the projects include:

  • Innergex is receiving $793,000 to develop a hydrogen production hub called Osprey H2 in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The aim is to produce hydrogen for domestic customers.
  • Waterford Energy Services Inc. is also receiving $793,000 for a demonstration project to build a small-scale, mobile green hydrogen production facility. The aim is to create a facility that can be moved to different locations as needed.
  • The Municipality of the County of Richmond will use $221,250 to develop a clean fuels strategy for the Strait of Canso. The aim is to harness the significant green hydrogen potential for local heavy industry.

“We’re grateful for the Government of Nova Scotia’s support and proud to help advance the province’s clean energy ambitions,” said Michel Letellier, President and CEO, Innergex. “With support from the Clean Fuels Fund, this will help accelerate regional green hydrogen production, which will drive emissions reductions, support Nova Scotia’s climate targets and create economic opportunities through clean innovation.”

Other projects explore further potential for hydrogen to decarbonize transportation and the use of biomass for heating and clean fuel.

The Clean Fuels Fund is Action 60 in Our Climate, Our Future: Nova Scotia’s Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth. The plan aims to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for all Nova Scotians. It includes initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, switch to clean energy and transportation, create a clean economy, make homes and buildings energy efficient and able to stand up to the impacts of climate change, and help Nova Scotians adapt to the changing climate.

The Clean Fuels Fund was a two-year initiative totalling $6 million. Another $3 million from 2024-25 is supporting seven more projects.
