British Columbia implemented a carbon tax in 2008, the first jurisdiction in North America to do so. The tax applies to fossil fuels used for transportation, heating, and electricity, while reducing personal and corporate income taxes by a similar amount. Collected at the point of retail sale, B.C.’s carbon tax is unique in North America; only Quebec has a comparable tax, but at a lower rate and without a tax shift. Thanks to its hydroelectric power, B.C. enjoys lower energy costs than most regions, even with the tax.
