The National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada (NPPAC) was established in 1963 as a citizen-led advocacy group dedicated to the creation, protection, and effective management of Canada’s national and provincial parks. The organization was instrumental in raising public awareness about conservation issues and championing policies to preserve Canada’s natural landscapes for future generations. Over time, the group expanded its focus to include broader wilderness protection efforts beyond parks. Reflecting this evolution, the NPPAC was renamed the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) in 1978, continuing its mission to safeguard Canada’s natural heritage.
