The Canadian Brownfields Network (CBN) Conference Committee has announced the opening of its Call for Abstracts for the 2025 National Conference, coming to Humber College’s Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation on June 17, 2025.

This year the theme focuses on the topic From Legacy to Opportunity – The Evolution and Integration of Brownfield Reuse. The CBN seeks to explore key themes around how modern challenges and opportunities are shaping the Canadian brownfield landscape.

The open call for abstracts focuses on five key words found within this year’s conference theme:

Legacy – What have we learned from our past brownfield redevelopments and rehabilitations that is imperative to consider in today’s complex development landscape?

  • Lessons learned, changes to approach, how are we becoming more efficient etc.

Opportunity – What are the opportunities resulting from our existing brownfield stock that can help to address some of today’s current needs?

  • Transit-oriented sites, industrial needs, housing needs, etc.

Evolution – How are we evolving our practices and what are the factors driving this change forward?

  • Novel remediation approaches, developing site strategies, focus on community engagement, etc.

Integration – How are new structures for policy and governance, and the use of new technologies and innovation, being integrated into our solutions for brownfield restoration and redevelopment?

  • Emerging site approaches, strategic project planning, accessing funding, cost/benefit analyses, socio-economic considerations, etc.

Reuse – What new ideas are being brought forward when we think of reusing brownfields?

  • Interim or temporary uses, conversion of former gas stations, etc.

For each of these, the CBN is welcoming ideas for case studies or thought leadership presentations.
