Waste Diversion Transition Act, Used Tires Program

In February 2017, the Ontario Minister of the Environment and Climate Change ordered the closure of the Used Tires Program by December 31, 2018, followed by the closure of Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) in 2019. This program, the first waste diversion program to be wound up under the Waste Diversion Transition Act, 2016, ensured that used tires were reused and recycled instead of ending up in landfills. Tire producers paid a fee to OTS for each tire supplied in Ontario, and OTS managed the collection and processing of used tires.
