Tomorrow, The Coca-Cola Company, in partnership with Pollution Probe, will unveil a new drone technology on Lake Simcoe as part of the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup. The technology will be piloted in collaboration with the City of Barrie.
The new drone technology, called a PixieDrone, is a remote-operated, mobile waste collector capable of navigating various bodies of water to remove floating debris, including organic, plastic, glass, metal, and paper.
It will join 135+ other plastic capture technologies already in use as part of Pollution Probe’s Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, an initiative that removes and analyzes plastic pollution throughout the Great Lakes waterways. The launch of PixieDrone furthers the City of Barrie Marina’s dedication to maintaining responsible environmental practices.
The Honourable Doug Downey, MPP of Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte and the Honourable, Alex Nuttall, Mayor of Barrie will be in attendance.
The Coca-Cola Company is supporting the pilot of this technology to help remove plastic waste that flows into the Great Lakes. The drone will significantly impact the removal of floating waste from the Great Lakes region.
The largest initiative of its kind in North America, the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup currently operates at more than 150 sites across the Great Lakes, including the St. Lawrence River and Lake Simcoe and has reported the removal of close to 200,000 pieces of plastic debris to date.
